Cebu Pacific registers 28% growth
Despite the ongoing global downturn, Cebu Pacific (CEB), the Philippines’ largest domestic airline, carried 428,431 more passengers this year. In the first quarter of 2009, passengers carried by the airline totaled to 1,970,004, as compared to last year’s carriage of 1,541,573 for the same period. This is equivalent to a 28% growth.
For the first quarter of 2009, Cebu Pacific’s domestic passenger base grew by 32 percent, 1,590,759, up from last year’s 1,205,327. Cebu Pacific’s international passenger traffic also reached 379,245, from last year’s 336,246.
“We will continue to grow our domestic and international operations by adding frequencies and opening new destinations.” Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific VP for marketing and distribution, said. “We hope to encourage more Filipinos and foreigners to take Cebu Pacific’s flights because of affordability, wide connectivity and convenient schedules.”
Cebu Pacific’s continued fleet expansion and low fares are the main drivers of the company’s growth. The airline started 2009 with a fleet of 25 aircraft and took delivery of two brand-new Airbus A320 and two ATR 72-500 aircraft in the first quarter.
Cebu Pacific added flights to 11 strong performing domestic destinations and five international cities including Shanghai, Macau, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Hong Kong. It also opened four new domestic destinations and added four routes from its Cebu hub.
Iyog explained that Cebu Pacific also broke its record of most passengers carried in a single day last March 30 when the airline carried a total of 27,740. The previous highest passenger carriage in a single day was last January 4 when the airline carried 25,987.
“Our efforts are geared towards making air travel even more accessible for everyJuan. The public can count on Cebu Pacific as their partner in stimulating business and tourism, in all destinations we service” she concluded.
Now on its 14th year, Cebu Pacific continues to have the youngest aircraft fleet in the Philippines, comprised of 11 Airbus A320, 10 Airbus A319, and eight ATR 72-500.

SLOWEST FLIGHT TO BORACAY IN FIVE (5) HOURS. THANK YOU CEBU PACIFIC.
To start with:
I purchased a CEBU PACIFIC one way ticket to Caticlan (Boracay) on their website on May 07, 2009. The price was unbeatable, inclusive of taxes and fees 1,977.92 PHP. Departure date was May 15, 2009; departure time 3:45 pm.
On May 14, 2009 at 10:00 pm (!), I received a SMS from CEBU PACIFIC (CP) informing that my flight was cancelled and advising to call CP for rebooking / cancellation. I immediately called, but I got caught in a loop of answering machines and advertisements.
After 20 minutes of calling still nobody responded. I gave up. The next morning (May 15 – Travel day), my Admin called CP and was informed that there will be a flight at 3:45 pm and that I was confirmed on that flight.
Five (5) minutes later, CP called and informed that all flights after 12:20 pm were cancelled due to aircraft maintenance and that I was booked now on the 12:20 pm flight. I rejected since my schedule did not allow me to leave that early.
Thirty (30) minutes later, CP called again that there will be a 3:45 pm flight (5J 915) and that I could travel as originally scheduled.
Note:
I was already suspicious about that mysterious cancelled / non-cancelled flight, but it should become much worse than expected.
And here the nightmare begins:
• 2:45 pm: Check-in at Terminal 3.
• 3:45 pm: Departure time, but no plane and no announcement by CP staff.
• 4:10 pm: A plane arrives.
• 4:25 pm: Boarding completed, flight attendant announces that we will arrive in Caticlan at
5:28 pm.
• 4:35 pm: Plane is still at parking position.
• 4:45 pm: Plane is on the taxiway, Captain announces that we will be on the ground for
another minimum ten (10) minutes.
• 5:00 pm: Plane takes off.
• 5:30 pm: Captain announces that we are so very late that we are not allowed to land in
Caticlan anymore since there is a cut off of all operations at 6:00 pm. Instead, we will be carried to Kalibo.
• 5:55 pm: Plane arrives at Kalibo airport.
• 6:10 pm: Passengers are taken to a bus which should carry us to Caticlan.
• 6:30 pm: Bus leaves Kalibo airport.
• 7:00 pm: Air-conditioning in the bus malfunctions. Passengers demanding aircon from the
driver. Driver stops (in a curve in the darkness) and starts some activities on the
aircon. It does not look very promising.
• 7:10 pm: Driver gives up on the aircon. Co-driver opens some of the bus windows.
Continuous ride to Caticlan without aircon.
• 8:10 pm: Bus arrives at Caticlan boat terminal. My private speedboat transfer to my Resort
is gone since they can’t operate at night time. I have to buy a ticket and to ride on
a regular crowded boat.
• 8:25 pm: Boat leaves Caticlan terminal.
• 8:40 pm: Boat arrives at Boracay terminal.
• 8:50 pm: Arrival at my Resort.
N.B.
At the end and looking back, I’m rather thankful, inasmuch that CEBU PACIFIC has not decided to carry us to China and to let us ride in a non-airconditioned bus from China to Caticlan. That would have been much worse.
Thank you CEBU PACIFIC.
Potential CP customers, be aware!
